I thought it was high time I do an MSD I have been promising for a long long time.

Actually, the Nebula class was the first MSD I ever did. And the picture below shows it. Gawd awful!

On with the "refit" then.

A wee update:

Finaly, a new update.
Life has calmed down a little bit and allowed me some time to work on the nebbie.

A quick update about Star Epic. The book itself is coming along... in fact, it's almost done. I need to revisit the Fleet Characters (character classes) and Starships chapters for consistency, and finish the Equipment chapter. After that it's just on to wrap-up and the fun part... play testing! :D In a bit of wonderful news, the author of this blog post (and artist of the gorgeous images on said blog post) has given permission to use his engineering displays for Nebula-class starships, in Star Epic media. This is the first actual Trek-specific art known to be going into the book. I seriously hope to see this guy's work in a future TV series, he is like Michael Okuda reincarnate, if a person could be reincarnated while still alive.

Ubuntu is an Enemy of the Open Source Movement

As you can easily confirm using the tag cloud in this site’s sidebar, I have considered Ubuntu to be an enemy of the open source movement for at least a couple years.

Well, sort-of. More accurately, I considered Ubuntu and Canonical to be a mentally and socially handicapped bully you feel sorry for, up until recently.

The Ubuntu project has gained easy popularity by targeting the lowest common denominator. I don’t mean “they make Linux easy.” I mean they abandon the social agenda in favor of a product.

The product is a symptom of the movement. By focusing on a product and constantly making decisions contrary to the movement, Canonical and Ubuntu are what is commonly called an imposter.

If you like Ubuntu but don’t care about the ways in which software is used to control and harm society, I don’t care what you think about Ubuntu, Free Software, or Richard M. Stallman. You’re a self-destructive idiot with no concerns about the good of humanity. You’re a moron.

A moron like the traitors who work at Canonical.

Is my language childish? That depends. How angry should a person sound after multiple years of this shit?

RPG With Me?

The category, “role playing games,” in my tag cloud over yonder is about to become one of the more dominant tags.

I’ve loved pen and paper role playing games my whole life. I’ve been a freelance writer for over ten years. It’s time for these two things to combine.

In order to make this happen, I need to start DMming on a regular, constant basis. Eventually, I hope to be running a game anywhere between 2-3 times a week, to almost daily, with different groups and in different settings. The end goal is to write original sourcebooks and other materials – some free and/or copylefted, others for pay (or donations from fans), or free-but-copyrighted.

So, first I need players. I prefer an adult crowd (I’m 36) and you must forgive me as I regain my chops with the rules. For now, everything will be D&D 3.5 / d20.  I may also start using Hero 6E simply because I own the books and want to become versed in more modern systems. (As a kid, I could run half a dozen systems …but that was 20 years ago.)

If you’re interested in any of this, perhaps you should visit my YouTube channel, where I’ve gone into more detail about my background and goals, and about one of the projects on my plate.

Hopefully, Reddit is Fucked Now

In a world of sensible public retaliation, one does not send this man a custom-manufactured bobble-head trophy of his Reddit avatar as a fond farewell gift after his extraordinarily well-deserved and overdue doxing, and remain in business.

If anybody wants me to explain the above because they think the doxing was wrong, don’t bother me. If you want my spin on the matter, go read this article but add insinuations that the guy hasn’t gotten remotely all he deserves yet.

This guy, violentacrez, is a one-man factory of hate and pain. He is an evil person. Fuck him, and fuck Reddit right into the ground.

Of Books and Covers (in the Early 21st)

The advice, “don’t judge a book by its cover,” has outlived its usefulness.

Let’s stick with the vernacular and assume that the word “book” can be replaced by literally anything that has variable value, and whose value is not always obvious by its wrapping, covering, advertising, etc.

Let’s also (hopefully) agree that with a few possible exceptions such as people, the majority of “books” are crap.

You instantly arrive, here in the early 21st, at a situation where you have two choices: deeply evaluate every thing you put into your life before making any judgments about it, with all the time commitment and detours-of-existence this entails… or you can live your life with a few spare hours for yourself. You can’t do both.

AND SO I AM BEGGING, ALL ARTISTS OF EVERY KIND, PLEASE:

Title your works intelligently.

Your works will frequently be listed by title only. A title which stands alone, without any preview, categorization, or synopsis. Imagine that every click is a decision (it is) and an expense of hope (it is) or a transaction of expectations and reality  (it is).

Ironic titles generate the wrong expectation, and if your title is offensive, you will be derided for opinions you do not espouse. Is the person issuing this derision wrong? Perhaps. But you, and anyone who could benefit from your work, are the ones being punished. If you are, for example, a music act called “Racial Purity” which is ironically named to counterpoint your unitarian lyrics, fuck you. On the basis of your name, fuck you. And that “fuck you” will be felt every time you get hungry or miss your bills, because people who would love to be paying you for your music, will speak against you in total ignorance.

And they’ll be right, because they’re speaking out against the ideas you have thus far communicated to them. They were already an audience of your thoughts at the moment they encountered your title.  Your title was part of your art, and it offended them (for good reason). Faced with an artist whose first point of contact with an audience was the two-word concept, “Racial Purity,” anyone who refuses to submit attention to the music of such a band, is in the right – you, the starving artist, cannot blame a fractionally-enlightened populace for denying you of patronage, if no sane person would give your work a chance based on its title.

People no longer have time for that shit. And nobody with any sense, goes around filling their head with the detailed nuances of every god damned thing anyone happens to put in front of them. Attention is earned. With titles.

Goodbye, France. Goodbye, Brazil.

The next time horrible things happen in your country, you will, in terms of international response, be stuck in the mid 20th century.

Nobody will know within a useful time frame, and especially not the less-wealthy people, aka, the people who care.

Human rights, economic fluctuations, business opportunities, the flourishing of art and science – all of these will be seen by history to have utterly ceased in France and Brazil as of 2012. Those nations might still take part in history or make some progress, but nobody will know, nobody will care, and nobody will credit your cultures for anything – even if you did a thing first. You are now global quitters who took your ball and went home.

How, why? Well ya see, Brazil and France are dropping out of the Internet. At least, their news organizations are.

So, France, Brazil: Congratulations on your decision to cease to exist.

Filed under mental illness because whoever made this decision is  attempting about half-a-dozen kinds of national suicide all at once, just to see which one will kill their country quickest.

OMGz PCs will they blend

and the blue rays, with the Jell-O pudding. I don’t even.

Every time I see a story about the death of the PC, I wonder what everybody’s smoking and when they’re going to pass it my direction. Is everyone just pretending to freak out so that they’ll roll out quantum PCs faster? Because this has no basis in reality, from anything I’ve seen. It’s like everybody picked a favorite April fools joke and just has been running with it all year.

I seriously just don’t even get what you people are talking about.

I’ll answer my own question. One day, the big dogs of the PC market collectively woke up, looked at the dog pile of money being spent by people who prefer to leave the house on occasion, and decided somehow that all that money could be theirs.

Well, that’s silly. Why invent an unattainable bubble in the future and then throw temper tantrums, saying sales are down compared to some future fantasy?

And as for past sales trends, you know, once upon a time there were no household PCs. That was 30 years ago. 10 years ago there were no (worthwhile) ultra-mobile PCs, smartphones, tablets etc. I would imagine that hammers and wrenches sold like hot cakes at first because they were new and nobody owned one yet.

If and when PCs are reinvented, and of course they will be, there will be another gold rush for manufacturers of full-sized, fully featured computing appliances. As for now, they are fully integrated into the culture; everybody knows whether they want one, why they want one, how long they want one to last. Novelty and vanity aren’t something you can permanently expect in this kind of industry. There will always be certain people who think these purchases augment their genitals, but the rest of us move on with reality and just buy what we need.

It all just seems like the most boorish rerun of “Missing the Point: Tech Market Edition” ever. The PC market isn’t going to die, probably not in my lifetime. It’s going to normalizeOh, no. *eyeroll*
